How to write a CV properly
The model of the type of your professional business card may well be met by the European Curriculum Vitae form (available for download in both Czech and English versions):
- make sure that your CV does not contain grammatical or factual errors (let it be checked by a competent person, if possible)
- a CV should be neat and clear, keep it in mind when formatting paragraphs and fonts
- use one or two common types of letters at maximum throughout the document – experimentation would do damage in this case
- be sure not to forget to include all the information that can prove that you are the right person for the position offered but also remember there is power in brief relevancy
- a CV should be no longer than 2 sides of A4
- if you have been unemployed for some time, mention it in your CV and specify the length of your unemployment
- a properly designed curriculum vitae should not contain any unexplained gaps
- sort the records from most recent to least current (current date is always on top) in the work experience section and the sections of education and training
- photos are not usually a necessary part of the biography, but feel free to insert one into the document if you feel it is in place
- mention all practices you had during study if you are a graduate
How to write a cover letter
A CV should be accompanied by a cover letter, which should ideally include:
- addressing the concerned person
- indication of the working position you are interested in (the exact name at best)
- information about where and how you learned about the offer
- your motivation for applying for the given position (reasons you are interested in the position)
- expressing the reason why the employer should choose you for this position
- information about when you could start a new job (whether at any time or within a certain time period)
- a closing statement and personal meeting expectations
Preparation for a successful interview
- clarify your vision of your professional career, i.e. what do you expect from the company and what you can offer find information about the company (or a personnel agency, through which you are applying for a job) and prepare questions about the company itself and the position you are interested in accordingly
- gather the materials you take with you into a neat folder
- find out how the interview will take place, whether it will be an individual interview or group selection (so-called Assessment Centre), whether the interview will take place in Czech or a foreign language, whether testing will be part of it (knowledge/ personality/ IQ or other tests ); ask also how much time should you reserve for the interview
- select clothing style appropriate to the position you are applying for, a corporate culture of the company in which you are applying for the job can also play its role – such as its formality / informality etc.; classic suit (with the accessory of a shirt and tie) / woman’s suit or elegant dress is the most suitable; they are not necessary if you are applying for a position in the vocational occupations
- in any case the clothing must be clean and nicely matched preferably
- if you select skirts / dresses, take care of a reasonable length, a miniskirt is totally unsuitable for an interview
- don’t forget to have clean nails, hands and shoes
- women should beware – do not overdo it with accessories, hairstyle, makeup and fragrance; everything should be kept moderate
The interview itself
- be punctual; if you do not know exactly where the company is located, verify it and find out information about transport links; if you can’t go at the agreed time or you are delayed, always apologize in advance and arrange an alternative date immediately
- do not forget the importance of first impressions – the person, who will lead the interview, will create it in the initiate moments of your meeting, that’s why you should think of the smile, body posture, adequately firm handshake etc.; it is hard to make the first impression on a second attempt
- try to stay natural and relaxed, do not be overcome by nervousness
- maintain the eye contact and a friendly tone during the conversation
- put off the discussion on wages until the moment you asked about it
- be initiative; give fundamental information (of course at the right moment!) even if you have not been asked directly
- speak on the topic
- make sure to get all the information you are interested in; asking meaningful questions is as important as answering them
- mention your biggest successes from your previous employment (or part-time jobs) in the interview – it may seem trivial, but you gain recognition for it from your senior colleagues
- selection procedures often have more rounds so in case of success in the first round you can expect an invitation to participate in the shortlist
